  • 8 More than once

Have been there more than once the last time there were 11 of us and the food and service was great as it was every time I've been there.

  • 6 A change of management needed!

I have been a regular visitor to this delightful riverside pub for more years than I'd care to admit to. I have always been delighted by both the quality and range of beers and the food on offer with one notable exception... my most recent visit in mid-June 2008. Thankfully, the beers are still in tip-top condition but the restaurant has started to slip down the hill into mediocrity. The Adnams 'Broadside' is a highly recommended pint, but the Adnams bitter and Woodfordes 'Wherry' are equally good, if a tad less punchy. The pub retains a warm and idiosyncratic feel and has all the genuine allure that J D Wetherspoon attempt to artificially create. The bar ceiling is covered in business cards, doubtless pinned up after Mr Adnam has done his very best to adjust your consciousness. The walls and ceiling of the restaurant area adjacent to the bar are adorned with hand tools from long gone local trades and crafts, such as coopering and reed cutting. In all my previous visits the food has been stunningly good and the service excellent, but sadly all has changed in the restaurant, doubtless as a result of a change of front-of-house management. The food was lack lustre and mediocre at best; the service was appalling and surly. A family of eight on the table next to ours had to wait for three hours to get through their three courses, which like ours was nothing to write home about. The 'fresh' fish and chips we ordered were greasy and the mushy peas weren't, they were Mr Birdeye's frozen finest. I have very strong suspicions that the fish was far from 'fresh' and was in fact frozen. The steak and ale pie was bland and swimming in brown 'gravy', and we all wondered whether it was actually bought in from Bookers or some other cash-and-carry outlet rather than made on the premises. The family, who had patiently waited for three hours, eventually politely complained to the manager who did not take kindly to any feedback. He reacted in an aggressive manner and was extremely rude to these rightly dissatisfied customers.All-in-all, a very sad experience, especially as this establishment had built such a good reputation as both an excellent pub with a good value restaurant serving very tasty home-cooked meals. I sincerely hope that the family owners will take all appropriate action to rectify the problems that will rapidly blight their business for many years to come.
